Sports Research Vegan Omega-3 from Algae Oil bottle
Why we chose it

Fish don't make omega-3. Algae does.

Marine fish are rich in EPA and DHA because they eat algae—or eat smaller fish that ate algae. The omega-3s in fish oil originated in microalgae at the base of the food chain. Cultivating those algae directly skips three or four trophic levels, and skips the heavy metals, microplastics, and supply-chain opacity that come with the fish in between.
Doughman, Krupanidhi & Sanjeevi (2007), Current Diabetes Reviews, on the case for algal DHA: cultivated microalgae provide DHA equivalent to that found in fish oil, with documented benefits for cardiovascular and neurological health.

Per serving (2 softgels)

1,020 mg omega-3. 700 DHA + 280 EPA.

A clinically meaningful dose of both long-chain omega-3 fatty acids—weighted toward DHA, which is the form most concentrated in brain and retinal tissue.

Why not flax or chia?

ALA isn't enough.

Plant sources like flax, chia, and walnut contain ALA, a short-chain omega-3 the body must convert to EPA and DHA. Conversion efficiency is poor: typically under 5% for EPA and below 0.5% for DHA. Algae provides EPA and DHA directly.

Skip three steps

The omega-3 food chain. Shortened.

Every drop of EPA and DHA in the ocean traces back to algae. Going directly to the source is shorter, cleaner, and more efficient.
SOURCE

Microalgae

The only organisms on Earth that synthesize EPA and DHA from scratch. Cultivated in closed fermentation systems on land.

+1 STEP

Krill & small fish

Consume algae, accumulate omega-3s. Begin to accumulate environmental contaminants from seawater.

+3 STEPS

Larger fish

Anchovy, sardine, salmon, tuna. The further up the chain, the more bioaccumulated mercury, PCBs, and microplastics.

By the numbers

Lower impact. Higher transparency.

Cultivated algae oil sidesteps the structural problems of marine fishing—bycatch, depletion, contamination, and untraceable supply.
0
Marine animals harvested
No bycatch. No fishery pressure. No impact on ocean ecosystems or wild fish populations.
100%
Traceable to source
Closed-system fermentation tanks mean the entire supply chain is auditable from strain to softgel.
LOQ
Heavy metals
Mercury, lead, cadmium, and arsenic below limits of quantification—a structural advantage of land-based cultivation.

The capsule itself

Plantgel™. Not gelatin. Not carrageenan.

Most 'vegan' softgels rely on carrageenan—a seaweed-derived thickener associated with gut inflammation in some studies. Sports Research developed a tapioca-based capsule that meets Non-GMO Project Verified standards without it.

Base material Tapioca starch
Animal products None
Carrageenan None
Certification Non-GMO Project Verified
The research

Algal DHA is bioequivalent to fish oil DHA.

Multiple controlled trials have compared algae-derived DHA to fish-oil-derived DHA on plasma biomarkers, lipid profiles, and Omega-3 Index outcomes. The body cannot tell the difference.
Arterburn et al. (2008), American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, conducted a randomized double-blind crossover trial (n=32): algal-oil DHA produced equivalent plasma DHA levels and lipid responses to cooked salmon. Bernstein et al. (2012), Nutrition Reviews, meta-analyzed 11 studies on algal DHA supplementation.
